Subsequently, the strategic importance of Herceg Novi ensured its turbulent history and frequent change of rulers and rulers. Most of the surviving buildings belong to the Venetians, Turks and Austro-Hungarians. The very name of the city - Herceg Novi (or Herceg Novi) - has its roots in the middle of the 15th century and during the reign of Duke Scepan Vuksic Kosach, the Serbian ruler over Bosnia, who completed most of the city's fortifications. In 1482 Herceg Novi was conquered by the Turks, in 1583 the city briefly passed into the hands of the Spaniards, and only in 1687 Herceg Novi was in the possession of the Venetian Republic, which ruled here until 1797, after which it was replaced by Austria. Subsequently, power over the city alternately passed to Russia, then to France, then to Austria-Hungary. Following the results of the Second World War, Herceg Novi became part of the Republic of Montenegro.

SIGHTS IN HERCEG NOVI

The glorious past of Herceg Novi is witnessed by his fortresses and Old citywhich attracts crowds of tourists every year. To get to the old town, you will have to overcome more than one flight of stairs - the whole city is located on a slope, and only the embankment is flat, for which Herceg Novi was nicknamed the city of steps. In addition to the old town of Herceg Novi, be sure to visit the Spanish Fort and the idyllic Savina Monastery, from where a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Kotor opens. Be sure to take a walk along the promenade, which experienced people call "Shetalishte Pet Danica" (after the name of the street), which in Serbian means "Promenade Pet Danica" - the longest promenade in Montenegro, connecting Igalo and Savino and lasting as much as 7 kilometers! Along the way, you will meet numerous restaurants and taverns (in other words, "taverns"), souvenir shops, as well as beaches.

Embankment of Herceg Novi, in the Savino district

Savina Monastery, Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Herceg Novi, Montenegro, is nicknamed the "city of steps" - the city is located on a slope, and to move around the city on foot you will need to overcome more than one span!

Start inspection old town of Herceg Novi from Nikola Dzhurkovic Square, overlooked by the Sakhat Kula clock tower (1850), have a “kafa” in one of the cafes and climb the steps leading to the clock tower (if you turn right at this moment and go down the stairs, you will find yourself on the promenade).
