Although Serbian is similar to Russian, it's still a different language, and to be able to communicate at least at a basic level, it's essential to learn it. Incidentally, Montenegrin is essentially Serbian, with only a few minor variations. For example, instead of "reka" they say "rijeka," and "lepa" they say "liepa," meaning the "e" is replaced by the letter combination "ie." That's the only difference.

Here is a very good one Serbian tutorial: http://roman-dushkin.narod.ru/projects/srpski/

And on this site Let's learn Serbian together you can download dictionaries, audiobooks, and Serbian tutorials.

Personally, I find dialogues in Serbian, the so-called “Serbian language matrices,” very helpful; you can find a link to them here – http://serbianblog.ru/?p=20
