The small town of Perast, the former haven of pirates, is primarily famous for its islands - the Island of St. George and the Island of the Virgin on the reef ("Gospa od škrpela"). The island of St. George, also called the "island of the dead" due to the presence of the cemetery, unfortunately, is closed to tourists, and you can only look at it from the side. However, we saw how a group of young people in kayaks moored to the shores of the island without any problems and arranged a rooming house there!
The island of the Virgin on the reef is open to the public - for 5 euros per person you will be taken there by boat and given 20-30 minutes to explore the island. This island is artificial. The locals tell the following legend: a long time ago, a sailor found a miraculous icon of the Mother of God at this place and was healed of a serious illness. Filled with gratitude, he decided to build a temple on the site. Then there was only a reef, and the sailors began to sink the ships they captured at this reef, and the captain of any ship passing by had to throw a stone there. Thus was born Notman-made island. Note that not everything in Montenegro is natural! 🙂
There is a church on the island, the interior of which is decorated with works by the Baroque painter Tripo Kokol. The church, in turn, consists of a treasury and a gallery - be sure to go there, there is something to see!
